Description

Klamath Art Gallery presents “Bearing Witness” during the month of March. A local photographer Gregg Waterman will be presenting his collection of black and white landscape and nature photographs, many from southern Oregon/Northern California area.

Waterman grew up in Casper, Wyoming. As a young boy, he spent a great deal of time outside with his father, fishing, and backpacking. When he left home for college, Gregg learned to rock climb and took up backcountry skiing. Often, he would carry a camera to document adventures with friends. After marrying his wife, Vivian, he continued to spend time in nature with her and their friends, eventually adding mountain biking to their growing list of activities. They lived in various places around the west before landing in Klamath Falls. Gregg had a career teaching math at OIT. He soon developed an interest in photographing landscapes, and in presenting photographs in black and white, as well as color.

Upon retiring in 2018, the Waterman’s decided to stay in Klamath Falls, as they enjoy the outdoor recreation that the region had to offer. Both have a strong feeling of “sense of place” for this area. Regarding the title of his exhibit, Waterman says, “There are universally recognized beautiful things that beg to be photographed, and I will make such a photograph when presented with the opportunity. But there are also interesting and beautiful things that we all just pass by without thinking twice about them. Those are the things that I most like to photograph, to bear witness to, so that others can also see the beauty in them through my photography.”

But the job is not over once a scene is captured. The goal is an elegant black and white print that transcends what was photographed. “People tend to focus on the content of a photograph, which is indeed important. But the print of a photograph is more than just what is in the photograph – the print itself has qualities of its own, a texture, and a range of tones from black to white,” says Waterman. “It is the careful balancing of all those tones when printing the image that makes or breaks the final print that hangs on the wall.”

Klamath Art Gallery invites you to attend their March Art Show and Sale “Bearing Witness”. The Opening reception is March 3rd between Noon and 4 pm. You can meet the artist Gregg Waterman and talk to him about his collection of photographs and the process he uses to create them.
